Concrete Model VS Virtual Model: Roles and Implications in Chemistry Learning

    Get PDF
Mastering the topic of symmetry requires a good representational competence to smoothly understand, visualize, and manipulate the movement of three-dimensional objects. This literature study aimed to describe how concrete and virtual media can be utilized in improving students’ understanding of the topic. The study implies that the thinking process, cognitive tasks, interactions, mental models, and the completeness features displayed by the two models in identifying all symmetrical operations are the distinguishing factors of the effectiveness of the two formats in affecting students’ understanding. The study also implies that the virtual format will contribute to students’ understanding better than the concrete format does. However, the empirical study must be explored further to ensure the difference between the two formats

Media Virtual Vs Media Konkret: Peningkatan Kompetensi Dalam Merepresentasi

Representational Competence (RC) can be enhanced with virtual and concrete media. However, the effectiveness of using virtual media is significantly different from concrete media. Recent studies do not fully confirm the use of virtual and concrete media because the materials used have a lower visuospatial level. This study uses a molecular symmetry material with a high visuospatial level. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of using concrete and virtual media on students' understanding of symmetry material. The research was conducted using a quasi-experimental design with 62 students as a sample. The comprehension test instrument has a reliability coefficient based on the Cronbach Alpha test of 0.897. Data analysis was performed with a two-way analysis of variance test. The results show that virtual media is more effective than concrete media in increasing RC and understanding molecular symmetry.

This Classroom Action Research aims to apply the Cooperative Scripting Learning Model to improve motivation and learning outcomes at SMA YP PGRI 2 Makassar. The research subjects were students of class XI IPA, totalling 35 students. The implementation of this research consisted of two cycles, each consisting of three meetings and one evaluation meeting. The learning outcomes that have been carried out have an increase in the category of student learning outcomes, in the first cycle in the medium category, namely 20 students or 57.14%, while in the second cycle, 17 people or 48.57%. The average increase in student motivation in cycle 1 was 60.57% and cycle II was 75.43%, as well as an increase in student learning mastery in cycle I, namely 24 people or 68.57% and an increase in cycle II as many as 31 people or 88, 57%. Thus, it can be concluded that the cooperative scripting biology learning model with process skills can increase the motivation and learning outcomes of class XI IPA SMA YP PGRI 2 Makassar

Spatial Ability: Measuring Its Contribution to Symmetry Understanding

    Get PDF
The spatial ability affects the understanding of the material that is a three-dimensional representation. This study aims to calculate the contribution of spatial ability to understanding symmetry. The research method used is correlational quantitative, with Sixty-two Chemistry Department students in the fifth semester taking chemical bonding courses. Tests of spatial intelligence and familiarity with molecular symmetry were used to compile information. The Pearson product-moment test was used to analyse the data. The results showed that students' spatial ability in the high category had a positive relationship with students' success in understanding molecular symmetry

Application of Shrimp Shell Waste Chitosan as Edible Coating to Extend the Shelf-Life of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

    Get PDF
Shrimp shell waste contains chitin compounds which are useful in the food sector. The synthesis of chitin into chitosan can be useful as an edible coating on tomatoes. The research was conducted in three stages: the chitosan manufacturing process, the antibacterial test of chitosan, and the application of chitosan as an edible coating on tomatoes. The manufacture of chitosan consisted of the isolation of chitosan (deproteination, demineralization, depigmentation, and deacetylation) and characterization of chitosan (moisture content, ash content, solubility, and spectrum test using FTIR). The yields obtained from the manufacture of chitosan were deproteination (66.66%), demineralization (57.5%), depigmentation (58.79%), and deacetylation (59.65%). Chitosan characterization includes water content of 3.2% and ash content of 0.41%. FTIR spectra test on isolated chitosan resulted in %DD which was 87.2%. Antibacterial activity of chitosan with four variations of chitosan (0.25%; 0.5%; 0.75% and 1%) produced chitosan with the best inhibitory power at a concentration of 1%. At the chitosan application stage, the average data for each test was obtained, namely the weight loss test of 1.60%; the organoleptic test showed a slower colour change of tomatoes than the control; the test for reducing sugar content of 12.46%; vitamin C test of 36.31 mg/100g; total acid test of 7.79%; so that the use of chitosan as an edible coating has a significant effect on the shelf life of tomatoes.

This research is a descriptive study, which aims to determine students' misconceptions about acid-base material in class XI SMA Negeri 1 Suwawa. The instrument used is Two-tier multiple choice. The research subjects used were class XI Science at SMA Negeri 1 Suwawa, with a sample size of 66 students. Research data was obtained from students' answers to two-tier multiple choice questions. The data is processed based on student answer patterns, which are then grouped into categories of understanding the concept, misconception 1, misconception 2, and not understanding the concept. The research results showed that students who experienced misconception 1 (MK1) were 14.65%, and misconception 2 (MK2) were 16.23%
